FEELING WORRIED?

Matthew 6:25-34

Jesus teaches about worry

“So my council is: Don’t worry about things-food, drink and clothes. For you already have life and a body-and they are far more important than what to eat and wear. Look at the birds! They don’t worry about what to eat-they don’t need to sow or reap or store up food-for your heavenly Father feeds them. And you are far more valuable to him than they are. Will all your worries add a single moment to your life?

“And why worry about your clothes? Look at the field lilies! They don’t worry about theirs. Yet King Solomon in all his glory was not clothed as beautifully as they. And if God cares so wonderfully for flowers that are here today and gone tomorrow, won’t he more surely care for you. O men of little of little faith?

“So don’t worry at all about having enough food and clothing. Why be like the heathen? For they take pride in all these things and are deeply concerned about them. But your heavenly Father already knows perfectly well that you need them, and he will give them to you if you give him first place in your life and live as he wants you to.

“So don’t be anxious about tomorrow. God will take care of your tomorrow too. Live one day at a time.”

(Because of its ill effects, Jesus tells us not to worry about those needs that God promises to supply. How many ill effects are you experiencing? Worry (1) affects you physically-making you unable to sleep or eat, (2) causes the object of your worry to consume your thoughts, (3) disrupts your productivity, (4) negatively affects the way you treat others, and (5) reduces your ability to trust in God. Here is the difference between worry and genuine concern-worry immobilizes, but concern moves you to action.

To give God first place in your life means to turn to him first for help to fill your thoughts with his desires, to take his character for your pattern, and to serve and to obey him in everything. What is really important to you? People, objects, goals, and other desires all compete for priority. Any of these can quickly bump God out of first place if you don’t actively choose to give him first place in every area of your life.

Planning for tomorrow is time well spent; worrying about tomorrow is time wasted. Sometimes it’s difficult to tell the difference. Careful planning is thinking ahead about goals, steps, and schedules, and trusting in God’s guidance. When done well, it can help alleviate worry. The worrier is consumed by fear and finds it difficult to trust God. The worrier lets his plans interfere with his relationship with God. Don’t let worries about tomorrow affect your relationship with God today.)
